becoming a member

We hope you will join the movement to promote progressive Hinduism! While we encourage everyone to subscribe to our email newsletter, you can also choose to take the next step and become a Sadhana Member. Among other things, Members will:

  • receive our monthly newsletter,

  • participate in quarterly "Town Hall" conference calls--providing an opportunity to provide further insight into the potential openings and directions for Sadhana & Hindu Americans at large to work towards a more just and compassionate world

  • and receive invitations to attend special programming.

In order to help make this possible, members will pay either a monthly or annual donation.

If you are interested in becoming a member, please read the document below, in which we more fully detail the values and commitments intrinsic to membership in Sadhana. (Download as a pdf here)

Once you have read these core values and paid the membership fee, please email info@sadhana.org a signed version to express your interest and we will move forward from there!

becoming a chapter

*The threshold for becoming a Sadhana chapter is having three or more members. Members will meet at least once a month, either online or in person (preferred).

The formation of Sadhana chapters across the country strengthens and expands the possibilities for social justice and compassion, and allows Sadhana to grow as an organization to reflect the unique issues and insights of diverse Hindu-American communities. The steps and guidelines once you decide to form a Sadhana chapter are as follows:

  1. Please email Sadhana at info@sadhana.org expressing your interest, listing the existing members in your area who wish to form a chapter. The Sadhana executive board will reply with relevant documents including the code of conduct, chapter requirements, and an overview of programming

  2. Hold an orientation call with the chapter members in your area using the aforementioned documents

  3. Sadhana merchandise will be mailed to you (t-shirts, flyers, buttons, etc.)

  4. Elect a point of contact & board liaison

      • This liaison does not necessarily need to necessarily lead the chapter, but they should be willing to represent the needs of the chapter as a whole. This position involves a bi-monthly call with Sadhana's Executive Board and other chapter liaisons, which will be information to be disseminated to the rest of the chapter.

      • Each chapter's voting process and constitution are decided as the chapter sees fit.

  5. Chapters will be expected to pay an annual due. This fee will cover the materials sent to the chapter, as well as aid in Sadhana's national seva, community transformation, and advocacy work.

  6. Chapter activities will be expected to fall under one of Sadhana's three areas of action: Seva, Community Transformation, and Advocacy. This can take a multitude of forms depending on the needs of the region and the capacity of the chapter's members. These acts of service will be expected to follow not only progressive values, but the values of Hindu progressivism. Co-founder Sunita Viswanath's blog post on the complexities of the convergence of general progressive values and Hinduism is a possible jumping point for each chapter to explore the avenues it wishes to take.
