Work With us!
Community environmental justice fellow
Application Deadline: February 20, 2026
Schedule: 5-10 hours/week between March 15 - October 15, 2026
Compensation: $30/hr (max $6,000 for work conducted during 2026)
Location: Remote, with required in-person work in NYC approximately 2-3 times a month
Position Overview:
Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus is seeking a Community Environmental Justice Fellow to support work at the intersection of faith, community organizing, and environmental stewardship.
For over a decade, Sadhana has hosted Project Prithvi - monthly beach clean-ups in Jamaica Bay, Queens - as an expression of seva, or selfless service. These gatherings create space where environmental stewardship and Hindu spiritual practice reinforce one another, bringing together diverse communities around shared care for our waterways.
In 2026, Project Prithvi is expanding through a research collaboration with John Jay College and New York Sea Grant. This partnership examines how worshippers and environmental groups understand each other and identify pathways to protect both religious practices and the Bay's ecosystems. The research addresses critical questions about building effective partnerships across different perspectives and priorities.
As our Community Environmental Justice Fellow, you will coordinate monthly clean-ups, develop partnerships with temple communities and environmental organizations, and have the opportunity to support this research collaboration. This role offers meaningful experiences in faith-based environmental organizing and community-led approaches to environmental justice.
Sadhana is building a Hindu spiritual movement for human dignity and collective liberation through community-building, sense-making, and capacity-building. Our work is rooted in Hindu values, and we strongly encourage applicants of Hindu backgrounds to apply. However, the fellow does not need to share a specific faith identity. We seek candidates with demonstrated commitment to working respectfully across differences and genuine interest in faith-based environmental work.
As a Community Environmental Justice Fellow, you will help with:
Partnership Development - Liaise with existing and potential community partners (temple groups, environmental stewardship organizations, youth groups) to collaborate on clean-ups
Event Planning - Plan, coordinate, and attend monthly clean-ups on select Saturdays from April to September 2026, as well as select temple engagement events
Project Communications & Education - Assist with scheduling, create simple education and outreach materials for community groups; create and post updates about Project Prithvi and other collaborations on Sadhana’s social media
As a Fellow, you will gain:
Mentorship from Sadhana leaders working at the intersection of faith, science, and community organizing
Community engagement skills for faith-based climate and environmental justice work
Improved skills in cultural competency and creative partnership development across disciplines (e.g., collaborate with field researchers, community organizations, artists, scientists, temple leaders, etc).
Insight into environmental justice, urban ecology, and cultural sustainability
