For over a decade, Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus has been coordinating beach cleanups at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, NYC in efforts to promote eco-friendly worship and volunteerism. We have heard recent complaints of worship happening at the Bay that harms Prithvi Maa - the antithesis of the Earth honoring traditions dear to Hinduism. While blame may be unfairly cast on Hindus every time there is an issue, there are many Hindus who have been advocates of environmental justice and sustainability who have joined our cleanups. As a part of City of Water day celebrations at Jamaica Bay Festival, Sadhana’s Community Environmental Justice Fellow Anjali Seegobin will be hosting an art workshop alongside our usual clean up.
Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus will provide an art activity that expands on the Project Prithvi beach clean-up series. Sadhana's monthly summer clean-ups bridge understandings between spirituality, environmental stewardship, and access to water in Jamaica Bay. Through an art activity, participants will utilize art materials to create and envision higher powers by reflecting on how we would visualize God if we had never been told what God looked like? Participants can describe their answer or choose to create physical forms using watercolors or other mediums. This activity will connect to sustainable practices relating to spirituality and the use of material culture.
